His position in the Hindi film industry is unique. Yash Chopra has been at the top of his profession for forty years. He is the founder of Yash Raj Films, India’s largest film production company. Yash Chopra will be always remembered for his great contribution to Hindi film industry and his unique style of romantic movies. Chopra then rose to prominence after the commercially and critically successful drama, Waqt (1965), which pioneered the concept of multi-starters in Bollywood. Yash initially worked as an assistant to I. S. Johar, and then for his director-producer brother, B.R. Chopra. Baldev Raj gave him his first directorial opportunity in Dhool Ka Phool. Later he set up his own movie production company, Yash Raj Films.

Yash Chopra With Shahrukh Khan

Yash Chopra, who was popularly known as the ‘King of Romance’ for his several films in that genre, directed some of Bollywood’s most successful and iconic films. In the five-decade long career that followed, Chopra made romantic films like Silsila, Kabhi Kabhi, Chandni, Lamhe, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Veer Zaara. Chopra, who has won six National Film Awards and 11 Filmfare awards, including four Filmfare Award for best director, was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. Chopra’s first film was Dhool Ka Phool in 1959, which was about illegitimacy, and he continued making several socially hard-hitting films, including Dharmaputra. His action thriller Deewar established superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the ‘angry young man’. Chopra was the one who began the concept of multi-starrers in Waqt (1965). Yash Chopra produced 53 films under his banner Yash Raj Film (YRF). I hope enjoy with the list Yash Chopra Movies 2012.

Yash Chopra

Yash Chopra (27 Sept. 1932-21 Oct. 2012)

Yash Chopra still had to shoot a song for the film in Switzerland, a destination Chopra made popular among cinegoers in India. Chopra’s films of the 1980s were shot in what were exotic locales for millions of Indians who had few opportunities to travel abroad. Yash Chopra had the main protagonists of his films traipsing through tulip fields in the Netherlands or singing and dancing near Switzerland’s idyllic lakes. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Elder son Aditya Chopra is a successful film director, and Uday Chopra runs the international branch of the family’s production house.

This overview of Yash Chopra’s career surprises most people. Mostly because it is hard to think that this whole corpus of films was made by one man. Yashji has been at the top of his profession for forty years, while most other directors in Bombay tend to have much shorter lifespans. Other directors may work in the industry for a time but they do not stay at the forefront of current trends. Apart from a brief dip during the 1980s, Yash Chopra has always been among the top five directors. Why is this? I think most people would agree that the 1980s represents quite a low phase in Bombay commercial cinemas.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak 1988

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak 1988

There are many reasons for this but among them lie the advent of colour television to India along with the arrival of the VCR and video. Families stayed away from the cinemas, many of which were allowed to become run down and were seen as places fit only for groups of young men. The increase in screen violence was partly responsible for this trend but also a symptom of it. Directors and producers were unsure of what would run at the box office and did not want to take risks with family movies. It was only when the young Mansoor Khan released his ‘Qayamat se Qayamat tak’ in 1988 that we saw the return of the musical family-oriented romance. For the first time for years, film music became cool among the college crowd with everyone singing ‘Papa kehte hain’ and Aamir Khan’s fresh-faced good looks appealed as a role model and a boyfriend. This was a college romance but still had feudal structures, Thakors and family disputes and, of course, its tragic ending made it unique. Yashji had made more action oriented movies during the 1980s, his romantic film, Faasle, had flopped badly and perhaps it was this success which gave him the confidence to return to the kind of film he really believed in. Chandni was a real return to form. A great story, performances from the top stars, a heroine-oriented story, romance, drama, and stunning music made this film a huge hit. While this was still a film about adults and mature emotions, the arrival of the talented Sooraj Barjatya seemed to point in another direction, to the teen romance whose defining film was Raj Kapoor’s Bobby (1973). There are scenes in this film which are a clear tribute to Raj Kapoor’s film and I’d like to digress for a moment.

Yash Chopra directed last movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma is scheduled for release during Diwali.
